Trying To Go Forward ( Chap 3)
Jun. 18th, 2012 02:00 pmA new one is up!
*****************************************************************************
As usual...These are not my people they belong to JE. I'm just borrowing them!
It had been a month since our night at Rossini’s and there were subtle changes in the office. Everyone seemed more relaxed and there was occasional laughter. It wasn’t overnight and we certainly weren’t 100% yet, but we were well on our way.
We were in the process of hiring three new Merry Men; Brendan James, Dante Cruz and Jameson Green. All former military, of course, and so far they were fitting in nicely. Tank, Les and I were meeting with them to talk about where they would fit into RangeMan.
Tank and Les had been overseeing their training, and finding their strong points. I had already looked over their backgrounds and combined with their skill sets, I had a couple of ideas where we could use them.
I headed over to the conference room and walked through the door into a very hard chest! I looked up at the 6’6” totally built body of Dante. He was built like most of the RangeMen; defined abs, pecs and muscles upon muscles. He had hazel eyes and midnight black hair. He had been a Naval Fighter Pilot, and also a demolition expert.
He grabbed my arms to steady me and flashed what I thought were his best features, his smile and those dimples. “Sorry Ms. Plum.”
“Haven’t we discussed this Dante? It’s Stephanie or Steph. We aren’t formal here.”
“I’ll work on that,” he replied and let go of my arms as Tank walked in, and was shortly followed Les and our other two new recruits.
Les came over and kissed my cheek, “Ready to get started, Beautiful?”
“I’m ready if you are Les.” I teased
He placed his lips just over my ear; his heated breath caressing me, “I’m always ready Beautiful,” he whispered. I was shocked as a jolt flowed through me. I reasoned that it was just static electricity and shook my head to clear it before I addressed the table.
“Alright then, let’s get started. All three of you have passed your RangeMan evaluations and have tested well. We would like to offer your full-time positions.” I looked around the table at Dante, Jameson and Brendan, “What are your thoughts on the job offers?”
Jameson was the first to respond, “I accept. Les went over the standard contract with us and the terms are fine.”
“I’m in, all the way. I knew of the reputation of RangeMan and will be proud to work here.” Brendan clearly stated.
Dante smiled and exclaimed, “Hell yes!”
I smiled at his excitement, “That’s good to hear. Welcome to RangeMan.”
Tank spoke up, “We have some specific areas we would like to place two of you and we’ll get to that in a moment. Here are the keys to your apartments. We’ve gone over the rules regarding time in the gym as well as the gun range. Hector will meet with the three of you when we’re done here and get you fully vetted in our security system.”
Les added, “Today we will set you up with partners, so that you can get to know each other and learn to how each other works. You won’t go in the field together for a month, but you will be doing just about everything else together. That will give you time to develop a relationship with your partner. So talk to them, let yourselves get to know one another, build trust, and the whole time remember this is the person that is going to have your back.”
Dante agreed, “Like the military.”
Les nodded his head.“Except here, once you’ve been with us awhile and have had time to develop relationships with everyone, you’ll realize we’re all family. And no one messes with our family.” There was a slight edge to my tone.
Dante’s hazel eyes met mine, “Duly noted. I have a younger sister myself and no one messes with my family either. I look forward to being a part of yours.”
Les glanced at Dante and a look passed over his face before his blank face slammed down. I could have sworn the look was jealousy. But why?
Steph looked over at Brendan. “We’re going to pair you up with Hector. Your computer background will be a great asset and Hector will greatly enjoy the help. I also understand you speak Spanish?”
“I do, and please call me Gig. That’s what I was known as in the Seals. Is Hector a computer geek like me?”
I had to laugh, Brendan was 6’1” with blue eyes, blonde hair, and like the other two had muscles on muscles. He was an incredibly good looking and sexy computer geek. “Yes, Hector is a computer geek of sorts; he is also a former gang member so please take that into consideration as you get to know him.”
“No problem. I was on the fringe of gangs when I was a teenager. I won’t have an issue.” Brendan assured us.
Tank looked at Jameson, “I hear you like to be called Frog, why?”
“I do, I was given that name in the Army, Sir. I was a paratrooper and made great jumps with unbelievable landings. After a few of them, the guys said it looked like I was playing leap frog and they started calling me Frog.” Jameson answered.
Tank busted out laughing, “Ok man. We’ll be partnering you with Woody. He’s also from Texas and that will give you a starting block to build from.”
I looked at Dante, “Do you have a name you would prefer to be called as well?”
He laughed, “I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours.”
“No can do, I’m called different names from my guys, and those are personal to them. You can call me Steph or come up with your own.” I countered.
Dante smiled andsaid, “I’ll have to work on that then. The guys called me Diablo for a multitude of reasons. Some I’ll be happy to share in private, but mostly it was for the explosions that caused hell to rain down on the enemy.” His dimples were out in full force and I found myself smiling back unable to resist.
I was still a little lost in his smile when I told Diablo, “You will be partnered with Ram, he’s our demolition expert. We’ll also use your piloting abilities so make sure to keep your license up to date. We have a private jet and I’m looking into a helicopter to aid in travel.”
Diablo nodded, “I can see your reasoning, and it allows multiple travel options within the company if there is a need. It seems that you like to insure that you have all safety aspects covered.”
I couldn’t help the catch in my throat, “I am very determined to have every safety aspect covered. One loss was one too many, and I’ll not lose another member of my family to something I could have prevented. Period.”
Les reached under the table and squeezed my thigh; I placed my hand on top of his and looked up to meet his eyes.
“Do any of you have any questions?” I asked.
I looked around the table, “Ok then. Tank, Les, have we about covered everything?”
“I believe that we covered everything, Beautiful. If not, I’m sure they will let us know, and their partners can also help them out.”
“Tank call their partners in so we can introduce them.” I smiled over his way.
“Yes Mam!” he answered.
I stood on my toes and smacked his head. “Smart ass!!” His laughter filled the room and you could almost see the surprised looks on the new recruits at the way we interacted.
We were quickly joined by Hector, Ram and Woody. They entered the room and came over to stand by me.
I pulled Hector to me and kissed his teardrops, “Hector, this is your partner Gig. He has a computer background. Teach him what you want him to learn.”
“Si Angelita.” He walked over to Gig. “Hola, come and I show you what we do.” Gig looked at me and I nodded as he left with Hector.
Woody came up to me, kissed my forehead, “Sweetness, which one is mine?”
I kissed his cheek and called Frog, “Woody this is Frog. He was a Paratrooper in the Army, he’s all yours.”
Woody smiled, “Ok, Frog. You can tell me about your nickname as I show you around.”
“You got it.” Frog replied as they walked out towards the control room.
Ram came up behind me, wrapped his arms around my waist, and kissed the top of my head, “So this one’s mine?” He looked at Diablo, “So tell me something about yourself.”
“I love explosives, flying, women, and I’m sure that my sister would say I’m a pain in the ass,” Diablo laughed, “Anything you want to know ask. I’ll answer any question regardless of whether or not you will like the answer. I don’t bullshit; it’s a waste of time.”
Ram chuckled at his answer. “I can relate to that. Let’s head out.” As the two of them walked out of the room, I looked at Tank and Les.
“So what do you think?”
“I think they’ll fit right in, Little Girl.”
“I don’t see any issues Beautiful. They all seem okay. Diablo maybe a bit wild, but nothing that can’t be handled.”
“I was serious about wanting us to obtain a helicopter. Frankly I’d like one at all the offices. There are enough pilots at each RangeMan office to make that a viable option. What do you think?”
They were both nodding their heads in agreement. “So where do we buy them? I mean I’m pretty sure they don’t sell them at Macy’s!”
They both burst out laughing; Tank looked at me and said, “I’ll take care of this one.” He walked out and headed for his office.
Les looked at me like he wanted to say something, but just wasn’t sure how.
“Les, are you alright?”
“I’m fine, Beautiful. Just thinking. Do you want to go out to dinner tomorrow night?”
“Sure, Les. “
“Dress in jeans and something comfortable. I’ll come get you at 7:00. Okay?”
“Sounds great.” I felt that funny pull again as Les kissed the top of my head. “Later, Beautiful.” He walked out the door with a smile on his face and if anyone had looked, they would have seen a matching one on me.
As I turned out the lights and closed the conference room door, I swear I heard a voice say -It’s time Babe.
